If you’re a business owner in Sonoma County employing non-English speaking employees then our Workplace Literacy Program may be just the thing for you. Our Workplace Coordinator is available to meet with you and design an English instruction curriculum to meet your needs. For example, you may have a group of employees who need to understand how to read safety labels on materials. Or, perhaps your employees routinely need to speak with your administrative offices by telephone but have difficulty doing so in English. Or, the communications between your first line supervisors and their employees is not as solid as you would like because the employees do not speak or understand English well. Whatever your set of needs, we design an English instruction curriculum focused directly on your concerns.

Classes are taught by our qualified teachers—many of whom are retired certified public school teachers with years of experience. Instruction is done at your place of business—at a time convenient to your business needs—so your employees will have no trouble attending the classes. Classes are taught twice a week during a 16-week semester. Each class is 1½ hours long and each semester consists of 50 hours of instruction.

Improving the English skills of your employees can lead to higher employee productivity through improved communication and efficiency, lower insurance costs due to fewer accidents, improved employee confidence, improved team building skills and enhanced employee loyalty to your company. In short, an investment in this kind of program at your company pays you back many times over.

The Literacy League provides trained teachers for all class sessions. We ask that you provide a meeting room at your place of business and, if needed, assist us in obtaining special instructional material. The cost for the entire program is a modest $250/student/semester. That works out to just $5.00/hour/employee.
